| The Special Care Baby Unit S.C.B.U |
| At Belly of Love we donate 10% of all profits to the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) at the Cairns Base Hospital. We decided to dedicate a page to them on our website to let others know about the great work they are doing. The following information are excerpts from the 'Introduction Booklet to Special Care Baby Unit' issued by Queensland Health and the S.C.B.U 2006 Fundraising Calendar. This unit is for all babies requiring specialised care. The reason for admitting babies to the Unit are many and varied. Some mothers have had problems during their pregnancy and delivery, some babies are ill due to infections and some have physical abnormalities. The largest group though are those that are born too soon - preterm or premature - or those that are smaller than they should be for their age. Whatever the reason for a baby's admission to the unit, at SCBU they offer the babies the best possible care. The length of time babies stay in the Unit depends on your baby's problem. Some require only a short stay for a period of observation whilst others will need to stay much longer. SCBU, is situated at the Cairns Base Hospital, and is a very important part of the FNQ community as they care for babies from southern areas such as Tully, through the Tablelands, Port Douglas, up to the Torres Strait and the Cape. The senior staff members are often required to go via the Emergency Rescue Helicopter or the Royal Flying Doctor Service for retrievals from these areas. The team of professionals that work in the Unit are committed to the care and ultimately the outcomes of the sick and premature babies and their families.
